You know how it goes: you’ve spent far too much time procrastinating, and suddenly you only have a few days (or maybe even hours) to secure those very special gifts for the very special people on your list. If the object of your gifting affections is a bibliophile, you could always do the simple thing and buy them whatever’s at the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Everybody loves a popular biography of [insert random historical figure here], right?
Or you could make it a truly memorable holiday season, and buy them a book in which an Elvis-impersonating assassin with a machine-gun takes on some very sketchy people.
My publisher, the ever-expanding Down & Out Books, has a sweetheart deal for this time of year: buy a paperback copy of any book in their bookstore, and they’ll throw in the e-book version for free. That means you could purchase the paperback of “A Brutal Bunch of Heartbroken Saps” as a gift, and keep the Kindle version for the next time you need a little reminder of how whacked-out life can get. Or you could gift the Kindle version (somehow; we’re not very technical with e-readers here) and keep the paperback, in case you need to kill a roach or something.
Just a thought.
In other news, I’ve been working with Prentis Rollins (who’s done some fantastic art for DC and Marvel) on a new graphic novel: “Jed Rex: Crush Depth.” It’s an undersea adventure that takes place during the Cold War, and it’s available through SHIFTed Magazine, which comes out twice a month via iOS. If you’re into Bond-style adventures, watches, luxury, or all of the above, check it out.
